The Arctic archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, the Kara Sea, and the eastern Barents Sea are characterized by low seismicity.

And today, February 23, 2017, a M5.0 quake was recorded in the region. Are Russian nuclear tests starting again?  In the region of the Arctic archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, the Kara Sea, and the eastern Barents Sea fewer than 20 seismic events have been detected in the last 30 years using stations on mainland Europe and on Svalbard.

Today, 2017-02-23, the north of Severnaya Zemlya, Russia was rattled by a shallow (10km) M5.0 earthquake at 20:13.

The era of Soviet nuclear weapons testing on Novaya Zemlya resulted in many large seismic events for which the source parameters are well known and which were recorded globally. So could this large earthquake for the region be the result of a new russian atomic bomb test?
