A gigantic magnetic canyon, stretching more than 700,000 km from end to end, has formed on the sun on July 5, 2016.
The coronal hole released a gaseous stream of solar wind that should reach Earth on July 8th or 9th. Next polar geomatic storms ahead?A canyon-shaped hole has opened up in the sun’s atmosphere, and it is ejecting solar wind into space. The immense structure, stretches over more than 700,000 km from end to end. As explained by SpaceWeather.com: “Coronal holes are places in the sun’s atmosphere where magnetic fields peel back and allow hot gas to escape.” In our case, the gaseous stream of solar wind will reach Earth on July 8th or 9th, possibly sparking polar geomagnetic storms when it arrives. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, especially in the southern hemisphere where dark winter skies favor visibility.
