Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) A magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook Yilan County at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday, the third in a series of shallow temblors that struck the northeastern county within an hour, the Central Weather Bureau said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries caused by any of the earthquakes.

The quake’s epicenter was located at sea 27.7 kilometers northeast of the monitoring station at the Yilan County government complex at a depth of 6.1 km, according to the bureau’s Seismology Center.

The strongest tremor, which registered an intensity of 2 on Taiwan’s 1-7 intensity scale, was felt in Yilan County and New Taipei, the center said.

Two earthquakes occurred earlier in nearly the identical location, the first a magnitude-4.3 earthquake at 10:18 a.m. and the second a magnitude-3.7 earthquake at 10:29 a.m.

The Central Weather Bureau said the three temblors were related, but it described them as simply normal releases of energy.

A series of four earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 3.2 to 5.5, struck further down Taiwan’s eastern coast in the Hualien area Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, but the bureau said those were unrelated to the release of energy off the coast of Yilan County.
